Tracing the Horizon of a Career

Updated: May 7

Why this matters

Most careers are measured in promotions and projects, but what quietly shapes us are the endings—those sunset seasons when a role, a team, or a chapter comes to a close.

This is the introduction to the Sunset series. It is about learning to honor those departures with grace: to pause, give thanks, and let go without rushing into the next bright thing. When we treat endings as sacred, we make more room for what’s waiting just beyond the horizon.

We often meet endings with hesitation, yet the sky reminds us every evening that there is a quiet beauty in departure.

Sunsets have always felt like a soft closing of the day’s book. The sky loosens its grip on bright edges and lets the colors spill—amber, rose, and deep violet—over everything we thought we had to finish. In that brief glow, there’s a kind of permission to exhale, to let go of what didn’t get done, and to notice the quiet beauty of simply arriving at the end of a chapter.

Over my professional life, I’ve had the chance to “sunset” many times. Every decade, my path seems to twist and turn. Like my Knot Art, the way forward has not always been clear. The turns have been surprising: hotel operations, then corporate operations, consulting, back to hotels, and finally leading a senior living community.

As I’ve moved across the United States, I’ve learned that I may never again see some of the team members I’ve grown to love and rely on. I carry immense gratitude for each work family that welcomed me. I don’t think I’ve ever been very good at leaving. Hotels are a transient world that can swallow you whole. Busy days blur into weeks, and the people you lead are caught in the same current. In that kind of pace, goodbyes are rarely neat or tidy. You have to stay focused on what lies ahead, while still honoring the work—and the people—you’re leaving behind.

As the sun is setting, I feel honored by the quiet grace of a career well‑lived, and by the soft surrender and momentary stillness it takes to welcome what comes next.

The Sunset Series

This series describes my last professional Sunset and the profound impact this experience it has had on my life. I invite you to explore my final Sunset:

  1. A Final Interview

  2. A Community of Blessings

  3. Queen of Hearts

  4. Heartfelt Farewells

I was awestruck by the skies above Orlando during my time there. The sunsets were nothing short of glorious—daily reminders that endings can be radiant.
